What Should Be Considered When Cutting Foam on CNC Routers?

When using a CNC router to cut foam, you need to consider the tooling, speeds, feeds, material hold-down, static and dust control, and machining strategy.

For the tooling, it’s best to choose rotary single-edge aluminum or foam-specific foam cutting bits, avoiding using multi-bladed standard woodworking router bits.

The material hold-down needs high-volume vacuum. If cutting hollow parts, you need a high-density MDF pad or a special PVC pad.

When machining, you need to leave machining allowance for secondary fine carving. And applying climb milling can make a cleaner, burr-free cutting edge.

Is Foam Milling Better Suited For A CNC Foam Router Than A Standard CNC Router?

Yes. The Z-axis travel of a CNC foam router is usually above 800mm – 1200mm, which can realize the one-time milling and forming of large-scale three-dimensional models.
